Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that his govt has voted unanimously to shut down the local places of work of Qatar-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera.

Netanyahu announced the choice on X, previously Twitter, but aspects on the implications of the phase on the channel, when it would go into effect, or whether it was lasting or temporarily shuttered ended up not quickly clear.

The conclusion escalated Israel’s extended-working feud in opposition to Al Jazeera. It also threatened to heighten tensions with Qatar, which owns the channel, at a time when the Doha govt is actively playing a key position in mediation endeavours to halt the war in Gaza.

Israel has prolonged had a rocky marriage with Al Jazeera, accusing it of bias from it.

Al Jazeera is just one of the couple intercontinental media stores to remain in Gaza through the war, broadcasting bloody scenes of airstrikes and overcrowded hospitals and accusing Israel of massacres. Israel accuses Al Jazeera of collaborating with Hamas.

Al Jazeera, the Doha-based broadcaster funded by Qatar’s federal government, did not immediately answer to a request for remark. Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language broadcaster acknowledged the information in its broadcast Sunday. Its English arm ongoing to operate with dwell shots from East Jerusalem just minutes soon after the announcement by Netanyahu.

Though Al Jazeera’s English operation generally resembles the programming observed on other big broadcast networks, its Arabic arm normally publishes verbatim video clip statements from Hamas and other militant groups in the area. It equally came below harsh U.S. criticism in the course of America’s occupation of Iraq immediately after its 2003 invasion toppled director Saddam Hussein.

It continues to be unclear how these kinds of an get would be enforced by Israel.
