TAIPEI — China dismissed the consequence of Taiwan’s Saturday elections, declaring its ruling Democratic Progressive Social gathering does not symbolize mainstream general public view following it unsuccessful to win a bulk in the presidential and legislative votes.

Beijing has framed the self-dominated island’s election as a selection among “peace and war, prosperity and drop” — with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding reunification with the mainland “a historic inevitability.” Beijing has repeatedly labeled Lai as a “stubborn worker for Taiwan independence” and a dangerous separatist.

China has in no way relinquished its claim around Taiwan — which has been self-governing considering that the Chinese Nationalist Occasion, or Kuomintang, fled to the island following its defeat in the Chinese civil war in 1949.

The final result of Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections will possible shape China’s posture towards the island, while also influencing China-U.S. relations and stability in the broader Indo-Pacific location.
