Uber starts presenting rides in self-driving Waymo vehicles

Customers purchasing an Uber in Phoenix, Arizona, now have the option to just take their experience in a totally autonomous motor vehicle, the business introduced in a site write-up Thursday.

Uber partnered with the autonomous motor vehicle organization Waymo, owned by Google guardian Alphabet, in Could. Phoenix is the 1st metropolis exactly where Uber has publicly rolled out access to Waymo’s cars and trucks, in part simply because it is “the largest entirely autonomous support region in the earth,” according to a release.

The autonomous Uber rides will be serviced by Waymo cars, and rides will be the exact price as the traditional auto rides Uber provides, an Uber spokesperson told CNBC. The spokesperson included that both Uber and Waymo have gained assistance from regional regulators.

Consumers who ask for a ride in an UberX, Uber Consolation, Uber Consolation Electrical or Uber Eco-friendly inside Waymo’s working territory could be paired with one of its autonomous cars. Users will be notified in the Uber app if they are paired with a completely autonomous automobile, and they can opt for to take or reject the car or truck.

Shares of Uber were down 3% Thursday early morning.

Folks who are eager to check out the autonomous rides can also boost the odds of being matched with 1 if they update their tastes in the app. There is also a 24/7 customer helpline for passengers that are traveling in a Waymo automobile.

Uber declined to share how several Waymo cars are currently being serviced in Pheonix or when it options to roll out the feature in other towns.
