U.S. lawmakers to urge automakers to slash their reliance on China

A bipartisan team of U.S. lawmakers will urge the CEOs of Ford Motor and General Motors to shrink reliance on China vehicle areas, especially electric vehicle batteries, sources advised Reuters on Monday.

4 lawmakers who are component of the Residence of Representatives China Pick Committee will travel to Detroit Tuesday to meet with Ford’s Jim Farley and GM’s Mary Barra, the resources claimed.

Republicans Mike Gallagher and John Moolenaar and Democrats Raja Krishnamoorthi and Haley Stevens also approach to meet up with with executives from auto suppliers which include BorgWarner, Continental, Bosch, Tenneco and battery startup Our Subsequent Vitality (1).

The concentration on Chinese car pieces arrives before long soon after U.S. Secretary of Point out Antony Blinken built a rare visit to Beijing and hours of meetings failed to develop any major breakthroughs. Ford mentioned Monday it “shares the committee’s plans of strengthening American competitiveness and establishing EV supply chains in the U.S., and in our conference tomorrow we prepare to share how we are doing just that.”

GM declined to comment on the meeting.

Gallagher, who chairs the China committee, in April raised fears about Tesla’s dependency on China, after the firm unveiled strategies to open up a Megapack battery factory in Shanghai.

The $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) signed by President Joe Biden in August aims to wean U.S. EV creation from Chinese source chains by imposing new circumstances on EV tax credits. The new tax credit history rules restrict eligibility to only North American assembled autos and established battery sourcing procedures.

Ford’s offer announced in February to use know-how from Chinese battery company CATL as element of the automaker’s system to invest $3.5 billion to establish a battery plant in Michigan has drawn criticism from some lawmakers.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio has questioned the Biden administration to block EV tax credits for batteries manufactured making use of Chinese technological know-how.

Ford explained earlier “generating those people batteries below at house is substantially superior than continuing to rely completely on overseas imports, like other vehicle organizations do.”

Bloomberg Information to start with documented the planned conferences.
