U.S. prosecutors in Virginia are probing whether or not Facebook-guardian Meta’s social media platforms facilitated and profited from the illegal sale of prescription drugs, the Wall Street Journal claimed on Saturday, citing paperwork and people familiar with the make a difference.

The prosecutors despatched subpoenas previous year and have been inquiring queries as aspect of a legal grand jury probe, the report stated, incorporating that they have also been requesting records relevant to drug content or illicit sale of prescription drugs through Meta’s platforms.

The Food items and Drug Administration has also been serving to with the investigation, the newspaper added. It noted that investigations do not normally lead to charges of wrongdoing.

The paper quoted a spokesman for Meta as indicating in a assertion: “The sale of illicit medications is from our procedures and we work to locate and take out this content from our companies”.

“Meta proactively cooperates with law enforcement authorities to support fight the sale and distribution of illicit medicines,” he added.

The prosecutors’ workplace and a spokeswoman for the Fda declined to remark to WSJ.

Meta, the Food and drug administration and the Virginia Legal professional General’s business office did not promptly respond to a Reuters’ request for comment.

Meta’s president of international affairs, Nick Clegg, mentioned on social media platform X on Friday that Meta had joined up with the U.S. Point out Office, the United Nations Place of work on Medications and Crime and Snapchat to enable disrupt the sale of synthetic medicine on the web and teach consumers about the connected hazards.
