The U.S. Division of Transportation on Monday explained it has fined Frontier Airways and five international carriers $7.25 million for delays in delivering refunds to tourists whose flights were canceled or significantly changed by the airline.

Passenger grievances about refunds from airways surged early in the pandemic when vacation constraints and issues about Covid-19 sent journey desire down to the least expensive stages in a long time.

Problems about airline refunds accounted for 87% of the 102,560 grievances logged with the DOT in 2020 and about 60% of the 49,958 issues in 2021. The DOT and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have vowed to beef up purchaser protections versus airlines, proposing stricter principles for when vacationers are owed refunds. Frontier Airways has been required to shell out $222 million in refunds, the Division of Transportation stated Monday. The company fined the extremely-minimal-charge provider $2.2 million for delays in shelling out out the refunds to shoppers.
