WASHINGTON — Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship on Monday to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, according to a decree translated by NBC Information.

Snowden’s title seems as just one of roughly 70 international nationals authorised by Putin for Russian citizenship.

The former NSA intelligence officer turned U.S. govt whistleblower, fled to Hong Kong and afterwards to Russia in to evade federal prosecution right after leaking labeled files to journalists. He was granted asylum in Russia in 2013 and later long lasting residency. Snowden, 39, has remained in Russia ever due to the fact.

The subsequent news reviews from a lot more than 7,000 classified files revealed the internal workings of a colossal U.S. government surveillance operation. Intelligence officials have formerly reported that Snowden may well have taken 1.7 million labeled files.

Stories revealed in The Guardian and The Washington Post uncovered a large government-operate spy plan that monitored communications of criminals, prospective terrorists and regulation-abiding citizens alike. Other accounts documented how Washington also secretly monitored some of America’s closest allies, like then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Snowden was charged with theft of U.S. governing administration assets, unauthorized interaction of countrywide protection information and facts and willful interaction of labeled communications intelligence. The prices carry a prison sentence of up to 30 many years.
