Pope Francis, 86, will have medical procedures on his abdomen on Wednesday afternoon at Rome’s Gemelli clinic, the Vatican stated in a assertion.

It added that his health care workforce had resolved in current times that surgery was essential and that he was predicted to stay in healthcare facility for “various times” to get well.

He will have the procedure on his stomach wall underneath a typical anaesthetic, the Vatican claimed.

Francis was thanks to be taken to clinic following his weekly audience at the Vatican on Wednesday morning, in which he produced no mention of the prepared operation.

He had used 40 minutes getting a test-up at Gemelli hospital on Tuesday.

The pope, who marked the 10th anniversary of his pontificate in March, normally works by using a wheelchair or a cane to walk mainly because of persistent knee agony.

In July 2021 he experienced portion of his colon eliminated in an operation aimed at addressing a painful bowel problem referred to as diverticulitis. He reported before this calendar year that the issue had returned.

The pope last yr said he did not want to have an operation on his knee due to the fact the common anaesthesia for his colon medical procedures experienced introduced unpleasant side-consequences.
