Former Vice President Mike Pence jumped into the 2024 presidential race Wednesday with a multi-pronged attack on Donald Trump, his former boss and the latest entrance-runner in the race for the Republican nomination.

But even as he tore into Trump at better size and in harsher terms than he at any time has ahead of, Pence touted his record in the “Trump-Pence administration,” highlighting the worries faced by his prolonged-shot marketing campaign.

“When Donald Trump ran for president in 2016 he promised to govern as a conservative. Alongside one another we did just that,” Pence, who turned 64 on Wednesday, mentioned in a kickoff speech in Iowa. “Right now, he makes no this kind of promise.”

Pence entered the race afterwards than most of his Republican rivals. Further than Trump, Pence is competing against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and a host of other names.

Pence, who submitted paperwork Monday to formally start his marketing campaign, also right tackled his slipping out with Trump following their getting rid of marketing campaign to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020.

Trump had pushed Pence to consider to overturn their loss by rejecting critical Electoral College votes whilst Pence was presiding about Congress in a ceremonial role on Jan. 6, 2021. Pence refused, and Trump denounced him for lacking the “bravery” to challenge the previously-accredited election results.

A violent mob, spurred by Trump’s lies about prevalent election fraud, stormed the U.S. Capitol, forcing Pence and associates of Congress to flee for their security.

“President Trump’s text have been reckless. They endangered my loved ones and everybody at the Capitol,” Pence explained. “The American people today deserve to know that on that working day, President Trump also demanded that I choose concerning him and the Structure.”

“I chose the Structure, and I often will,” Pence reported. “My previous functioning mate proceeds to insist that I experienced the right to overturn the election. President Trump was incorrect then and he is improper now.”

“I have often prayed for him in the past handful of years,” Pence explained, “I experienced hoped he would come all-around and see that he had been misled about my function that working day. But that was not to be,” he included.

“I imagine that any person who puts them selves over the Constitution should never be president of the United States. And any individual who asks anyone else to place them more than the Structure should really by no means be president of the United States once more,” Pence said.

Slipping out

Pence, who preaches a more conventional manufacturer of Republican social conservatism than Trump and a further top rated contender, DeSantis, also took goal at Trump more than his reluctance to acquire a challenging stance on abortion.

“Just after main the most professional-everyday living administration in American record, Donald Trump and others in this race are retreating from the cause of the unborn,” Pence stated.

The extremely polarizing situation grew to become a central ingredient of the 2022 midterm elections, next the Supreme Court ruling overturning the longstanding constitutional right to abortion. Democrats broadly outperformed Republicans, expanding their Senate majority and struggling lesser-than-anticipated losses in the Property.

But Pence lamented that Trump treats abortion “as an inconvenience, even blaming election losses on overturning Roe v. Wade.”

Pence served extra than a 10 years in the U.S. Residence and a single phrase as governor of Indiana before starting to be Trump’s functioning mate in his successful 2016 presidential campaign. He was noticed as one particular of Trump’s most loyal aides for all four several years of his phrase.

But pursuing their crack over the 2020 election final results, Pence has dropped favor with a section of Republican voters. Trump, meanwhile, remains the party’s de facto chief, keeping a commanding guide in polls of the main race.

Pence’s poll figures are better than some of his competitors’ but have generally hovered about the minimal- to mid-one digits in surveys of the future main industry.
