The freshly elected leader of United Airlines pilots’ union has resigned right after a series of his modern on-line posts sparked an outcry from some other aviators and union leaders.

Neil Swindells, a Chicago-primarily based Boeing 787 captain, was narrowly elected earlier this week to guide the union of far more than 14,000 pilots. Some of the messages experienced surfaced prior to the union leadership’s vote, which he narrowly received. The election was held immediately after the preceding chairman resigned because of to a family issue.

Swindells, who could not straight away be achieved for comment, declared his resignation in a observe to pilots late Wednesday.

United Airways didn’t promptly comment. Swindells, as head of the pilot union, would have had a seat on United’s board of administrators. The airline and the union are in the center of agreement negotiations and prior endeavours to get to a deal have failed.

On Sept. 16, two days soon after United declared a partnership with just one-time rival Emirates at an occasion at Washington Dulles Global Airport, Swindells wrote on a non-public concept board for pilots: “And I am sure EMIRATES experienced Practically nothing TO DO with the EMIRATES MALE CAPTAIN getting flanked” by a United “Woman Initially OFFICER.”

He wrote that the occasion showed Emirates’ “DOMINANCE OF THE CODESHARE, while giving UNITED their sought after DEI income shot!!!”

DEI is a normally applied shorthand for diversity, equity and inclusion. Code-sharing in the aviation industry is when airlines associate to industry each other’s flights.

Swindells, who has been at United for virtually three many years, apologized “to any one I have offended” on Tuesday for language “that was often vibrant, heated, and inappropriate,” but declined to step down at the time.

In his resignation be aware to pilots Wednesday night, he mentioned that “although lots of of these factors have been taken fully out of context and publicly weaponized versus me, I can not overlook their existence and the detrimental impact it has had on a lot of of my fellow pilots.”

Screenshots of some of Swindells posts were shared with CNBC.

Several hours before he stepped down, the head of the Air Line Pilots Affiliation, Global, the mum or dad union of the United and other airlines’ chapters, issued a statement expressing it would generally “stand and battle” for an inclusive aviation group.

“Underneath our democratic framework, United pilots elect their leaders and it is really up to them to decide who they want at the helm,” Capt. Joe DePete wrote.
