SINGAPORE — The United Kingdom will commit alone more completely to the Indo-Pacific location, beyond its ongoing efforts to be part of a large trade deal in the region, the country’s new overseas secretary said Thursday.

“The Indo-Pacific tilt is in this article to continue to be,” James Cleverly reported at the Milken Institute Asia Summit. “It is long-lasting.”

That “tilt” toward the Indo-Pacific will incorporate even further cooperation on economic problems, protection issues and “shared values,” Cleverly said.

The overseas secretary pointed to “our dedication to sovereignty and territorial integrity and freedom from financial coercion, and a shared perception in the benefit of democracy and open up marketplaces.”

Cleverly stated that 1.7 million British citizens live in the region, and the United Kingdom has trade relationships worthy of $250 billion in the Indo-Pacific.

The Detailed and Progressive Settlement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP, is a trade pact that at present involves seven countries in Asia-Pacific and four in the Americas. It advanced out of the now-defunct Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, a trade bloc that was originated by the United States but which fell apart right after previous President Donald Trump scrapped U.S. involvement.

The United Kingdom is in the system of becoming a member of the CPTPP, a go that it hopes would enable it diversify its trade partnerships, significantly considering the fact that the country departed from the European Union.
