NASA on Wednesday introduced it has awarded 5 more astronaut missions to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, with a agreement truly worth an added $1.4 billion to the corporation.

The further flights fall underneath NASA’s Professional Crew software, which provides astronauts and cargo to and from the Worldwide Area Station. SpaceX is now on its fourth operational human spaceflight for the company.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft has been competing with Boeing and its Starliner capsule for contracts less than Industrial Crew. Whilst each businesses have now been awarded nearly $5 billion to acquire and start their respective capsules, SpaceX has won 14 missions and Boeing has gained 6. The latter has however to launch astronauts with Starliner.

Because of to delays, and the mounted-price tag nature of NASA’s contracts for the software, Boeing has absorbed $688 million in expenditures from delays and supplemental do the job on the capsule. Following successfully finishing an uncrewed Starliner flight to the ISS in May well, the company now aims to carry astronauts for the to start with time in February.

Concerning SpaceX and Boeing, the agency has awarded contracts for 20 flights to day, masking crew missions until eventually 2030 when the ISS is envisioned to retire from use.
