Malaysia is not fazed about level of competition from China or the U.S. as it pushes into greater-conclude semiconductor manufacturing, in accordance to the country’s second finance minister.

“The semiconductor room is now in the upcycle — and Malaysia will be a beneficiary of that,” Amir Hamzah Azizan explained to CNBC’s Karen Tso at the IMF spring conferences in Washington on Wednesday.

He also famous the region would not see China — which is Malaysia’s premier buying and selling husband or wife now — as a rival in the sector.

“I believe the reality of it all is, there is plenty of expansion that will go all over. So, all people will get some pickups on that a single,” he mentioned.

If everything, Amir Hamzah described, the modern geopolitical tensions have shown it is vital for source chains to continue to be strong.

“We’re seeing a ton of stop customers now diversifying their offer chain. Our target, basically, is to give a quite lively, powerful provide chain connectivity, and make confident that we ride on that.”

Competing with U.S.

Malaysia seems to be benefitting from U.S.-China trade tensions, which has prompted firms to diversify their semiconductor operations. The region is now concentrated on shifting away from the back end of the chip offer chain manufacturing and moving up the worth chain.

The country holds 13% of the world industry for chip packaging, assembly and tests providers, the Malaysian Expenditure Improvement Authority stated in a Feb. 18 report. The governing administration is also boosting efforts to grow its semiconductor ecosystem and appeal to investments.

Even though the U.S. is ramping up investments in chips, Amir Hamzah highlighted Malaysia presents a diverse value proposition.

“I believe the place Malaysia competes in, we’re not likely to go head on to the tail conclude of the significant-conclusion opposition, wherever it’s possible the U.S. is bringing all the elements,” he stated, adding “hence, I don’t assume it truly is a massive challenge for us.”

The state is concentrating on “extending their value chain” to catch the attention of new corporations and bolster its place in the area, he mentioned. “At the conclude of the working day,” the minister included, its “about economies of scale.”
