Malaysia is doubling down on the semiconductor field to capture growth in the escalating electric powered car or truck industry.

In an unique job interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Thursday, Trade and Industry Minister Zafrul Aziz pointed out that EV makers procure components from Malaysia “in the billions.

As these types of, “they want to realign the provide chain to make certain that stability of [their] provide chain, resiliency of the provide chain is there, so they are coming nearer to Malaysia and we are inviting several EV makers to appear,” he claimed.

The goal was for EV makers to expand their presence in the region, he said pointing out that Tesla is currently one particular of Malaysia’s main charging station vendors. Some of the biggest Malaysian corporations are also Tesla’s suppliers.

The “conclude game” is for “the likes of Tesla, the rest of them [to come] and develop their giga manufacturing facility assembly in the state,” Zafrul reported.

In August, Tesla set up a regional headquarters in Malaysia, and Primary Minister Anwar Ibrahim told CNBC’s Martin Soong at the time that “EV transpires to be our priority.”

Zafrul instructed Malaysian media in December that he believed EVs would catalyze the progress of Malaysia’s manufacturing industry exports, and that Malaysia remained an desirable desired destination for electric powered car or truck buyers.

He pointed out mentioned that semiconductors are integral to the producing of autos, but even extra so in EVs. A typical auto consists of about 5,000 chips, but an EV can need up to 15,000 chips, he said.

“So, Malaysia is there in that source chain and we want to get advantage of that,” he additional.

Relocating up the value chain

To that finish, Malaysia has set up a new national semiconductor taskforce, to make it possible for the nation to shift up the worth chain in the chips business.

Zafrul explained Malaysia aims to emphasis on what is regarded as the “entrance finish” of the chips market, alternatively of just the “back stop.”

The “front conclusion” of the chip manufacturing procedure involves wafer fabrication and engraving circuits, while the “again conclude” focuses on packaging and assembly of built-in circuits.

To that finish, Malaysia established a countrywide semiconductor strategic taskforce this week, in a bid to improve the country’s semiconductor ecosystem and attract strategic investments, Malaysian media claimed.

In his statement, Zafrul reportedly explained the marketplace was essential for the nation’s electrical and electronics (E&E) sector and other technological innovation-dependent industries this sort of as EVs.

Zafrul informed CNBC that the taskforce highlights the significance of the country’s semiconductor sector — which accounts for 7% of the country’s gross domestic products and fifty percent of its exports.

The crew will not only be looking at expanding the semiconductor sector in Malaysia, but will also seek out to guarantee you can find a “talent provide chain” in the region.

Malaysia requires 50,000 electrical and electronics engineers every 12 months, “of which we [have] a shortage,” he told CNBC.

Nonetheless, Malaysia is however in a very good place to accomplish the purpose of escalating its semiconductor market., he stated.

“The superior thing about Malaysia is this business begun in early 70s. So it really is been right here 50 years. And the basis is powerful for us currently to move up the value chain.”
