Irish premier Leo Varadkar on Thursday said there has yet to be a breakthrough more than Northern Ireland’s put up-Brexit trade principles, but expressed hopes that an agreement is in access.

“We’re not there however. I am hopeful that we will get there,” Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Varadkar explained to CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“I assume certainly Primary Minister [Rishi] Sunak and the British govt look to be pretty significant about coming to an agreement and settling this situation. And I think there is elevated flexibility from the European Union aspect, which features Eire, about coming to an agreement.”

Varadkar identified other issues that involve notice, “The protocol is crucial, but there is war in Ukraine, there is a worldwide economic downturn underway, an strength disaster, inflation and Europe and the U.K. need to function jointly.”

Irish PM: No recession in Ireland expected

His reviews come shortly following Ireland’s Finance Minister Michael McGrath spoke of growing optimism and “welcome signals of development” encompassing negotiations between the U.K. and European Union.
