The Residence find committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is suspending its subsequent community hearing thanks to a significant hurricane, the leaders of the panel declared Tuesday.
The hearing, which was scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET, will now be held at a later date to be declared, Committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss out on., and Vice Chair Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., explained in a joint statement.
“In mild of Hurricane Ian bearing down on areas of Florida, we have made a decision to postpone tomorrow’s proceedings,” Thompson and Cheney explained.
“We’re praying for the basic safety of all these in the storm’s route. The Find Committee’s investigation goes forward and we will quickly announce a date for the postponed proceedings,” they stated.
The hold off came just after Hurricane Ian, a Class 3 storm expected to wallop Florida with large winds and significant rainfall, made landfall in Cuba.
Forecasters forecast Ian could strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane by Tuesday evening.
The panel’s subsequent listening to will be its ninth, and the initially considering that late July.
The committee is investigating the specifics and circumstances surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, when a violent mob of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. The insurrection forced lawmakers to flee their chambers and quickly stopped them from confirming President Joe Biden’s victory more than Trump in the 2020 election.
In the now-postponed hearing, the panel was predicted to demonstrate clips of Roger Stone, a longtime political operative and confidant of Trump’s, chatting about demanding the 2020 election outcomes, NBC News claimed.
