From a childhood around elite athletes to leading the London Marathon, Hugh Brasher reveals how his sporting roots shape his decisions

London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher shares how his family’s sporting legacy shaped his career, why embracing tough decisions builds resilience, and how focusing on where you want to go—rather than the obstacles—is key to leadership and growth.

Raised by a three-time Grand Slam champion and an Olympic gold medalist, Hugh Brasher’s life has always been immersed in sport.

“Sport has been an intrinsic part of my life. It runs through my blood,” Brasher told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick on the “Executive Decisions” podcast.

After transforming his family’s specialist sporting shop into a nationwide chain, Brasher eventually sold the business to Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley—a decision he stands by today.

“Does the company exist anymore? No, it doesn’t. Should it exist anymore? I don’t know, because society changes… I learned an enormous amount from Mike,” Brasher said.

Brasher now leads London Marathon Events, overseeing some of the world’s most iconic endurance races. He is a strong believer in manifesting your destiny.

“Look to where you want to go. Look to the person you want to be. Start reading the right books. Start connecting with the right people. You will end up in that place if you keep looking at it,” he said.

Today, Brasher is focused on inspiring activity, expanding access to sport and driving ambitious plans for global growth.
