The paid Blue subscription service led to a myriad of pranksters developing imposter accounts on Twitter. It left the platform even additional ripe for misinformation, and a lot of cheaply acquired checkmarks had been used to impersonate brands, politicians and famous people with unflattering messages.

A person impersonating pharmaceutical giant Eli Lily, for instance, tweeted “we are enthusiastic to announce insulin is free of charge now.”

Twitter has trialed utilizing two examine marks, including a Blue a person for compensated and previously-confirmed end users and a grey “Official” checkmark for some manufacturers, these types of as news businesses. But there was a puzzling overlap, exactly where some accounts had both checkmarks. Musk killed the “Offical” checkmark the exact day it rolled out.

The hold off arrives soon after Musk gutted considerably of Twitter’s staff members. About fifty percent of the company’s 7,500 staff ended up laid off previously this thirty day period. Then, final 7 days, about another 1,200 total-time staff members still left, according to The New York Periods, after Musk demanded staff members dedicate to doing work “extended several hours at superior intensity” on his vision for “Twitter 2.” or post their resignations.
