Elon Musk confirms Tesla plan for robotaxis on Austin roads in June

Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke with CNBC anchor David Faber at the automaker’s headquarters in Austin, Texas on Tuesday where he discussed the company’s latest developments in self-driving technology.

Tesla is poised to launch a “robotaxi” in Austin, Texas next month — plans Musk confirmed on Tuesday.

Musk said the robotaxi service will start with about 10 vehicles in Austin, and rapidly expand to 1,000s of vehicles should the launch go well with no incidents.

Tesla will seek to put its forthcoming robotaxis on the road in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Musk told Faber.

Since 2016, Musk has been promising Tesla investors, customers and fans that the company is about a year away from delivering a self-driving car that’s capable of driving passengers around safely without human interventions, or a human at the steering wheel.

Alphabet’s Waymo is already operating commercial, driverless ride-hailing services in various U.S. markets.  On a recent earnings call, Alphabet said Waymo already conducts 250,000 paid trips per week.
