Chinese electric powered vehicle maker Nio and tech big Tencent agreed to get the job done with each other on places together with autonomous driving and higher-definition mapping.

Tencent — a gaming, social media and cloud computing titan — has signed a cooperation agreement with Nio, a person of Tesla’s rivals in China, as the corporations seem to cash in on Beijing’s concentration on so-called new electricity cars and trucks.

The partnership could let Tencent to do this, even though also supplying Nio the technological innovation backing of 1 of China’s biggest firms. Tencent is previously a major trader in Nio, which is striving to differentiate itself from a sea of electric auto start off-ups.

It comes soon after e-commerce company Alibaba and Nio rival Xpeng in August opened a computing centre to practice software package for driverless cars and trucks.

Nio and Tencent explained on Monday they will work alongside one another on substantial-precision mapping programs for drivers. Nio will also be working with Tencent’s cloud computing infrastructure for information storage and education for autonomous driving. Driverless autos call for large quantities of true-time facts to be processed in purchase to teach algorithms.

Tencent’s partnership with Nio presents the company an additional prospect to push into new business places as its core movie gaming organization, which has been battered by rigorous domestic regulation, carries on to confront headwinds.

Nio in the meantime is going through its own problems, like widening losses and strain on margins from better product expenditures and offer chain challenges.

Nonetheless, the corporation delivered 31,607 vehicles in the third quarter, marking a quarterly shipping and delivery file for the start off-up.

Even so, China’s at the time higher-traveling EV start-ups have witnessed their share rates hammered this calendar year as buyers turned absent from development shares and China’s overall economy faced a slew of problems.
