Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed Tuesday that China’s developing aggression toward Taiwan has undermined the country’s possess pursuits.

“I believe the technique that they have shown in modern years has really been completely counterproductive to their passions,” Blinken mentioned at the Environment Financial Forum in Davos, Switzerland on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Avenue.”

Taiwan is an epicenter for the production of semiconductors, which China relies on, and the adjacent Taiwan Strait is a big commercial route that has implications for economic stability in the location.

Blinken’s feedback appear times following Taiwan voters elected the Democratic Progressive Party’s Lai Ching-te to provide as the upcoming president. Of the candidates, Lai was Beijing’s the very least favorite as he would possible sustain the DPP’s status quo when it arrives to relations with mainland China and the U.S.

In the months top up to the election, Taiwan officers reported a number of attempts by the Chinese government to sway the election by means of escalating navy pressure and disinformation campaigns.

Despite China’s distaste for Lai, the White Dwelling has been supportive, issuing several congratulatory statements for the president-elect. That has further angered Beijing.

“The US Condition Department’s statement on the election in China’s Taiwan area very seriously violates the one particular-China theory and the a few China-US joint communiqués, and goes from the US’ individual political dedication to maintaining only cultural, industrial, and other unofficial relations with the folks of Taiwan,” China’s Overseas Ministry wrote in a statement Sunday.

“It also sends a gravely mistaken signal to the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces. We strongly deplore and firmly oppose this, and have created critical representations to the US aspect,” the statement reported.

At Davos, Blinken reiterated the official U.S. stance on Taiwan and China, which simultaneously supports Taiwan’s democratic techniques but does not guidance its independence.

The end result of Taiwan’s election would inevitably have ripple effects on the geopolitical local weather and financial landscape. The U.S. has been preparing appropriately.

Days ahead of Taiwan voters took to the polls, the White Property said it was getting ready numerous contingency designs for a probable “interval of larger pressure.”

“I really don’t want to get into particulars on individuals, but of program, we have to be geared up and contemplating as a result of any eventuality … ranging from no response to the better close,” a senior administration formal mentioned Wednesday.

China, which claims sovereignty around Taiwan, has designed obvious its intentions to reunify the island with the mainland, including through President Joe Biden’s a person-on-a single meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China has not dominated out army drive to execute that aim.

“What we’re focused on is protecting peace and security and we have been really crystal clear with China about that and we’ve been incredibly apparent with Taiwan about that,” Blinken said.
