Belarusian human legal rights activist Ales Bialiatski, Russian human legal rights firm Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights firm Center for Civil Liberties have been awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.

Bialiatski, 60, served spark the democracy movement that started in Belarus in the 1980s. He has been in prison given that 2021 on a demand of tax evasion commonly regarded as to be politically motivated. The last recipient, Memorial, was launched in 1987 in the former Soviet Union to honor victims of political oppression.

In a push conference, Nobel Committee Chair Berit Reiss-Andersen said the prize was “not addressing [Russian] President Putin … other than that his government, as with the authorities in Belarus, is symbolizing an authoritarian federal government that is suppressing human rights activists.” 

Bialiatski’s campaign group, Viasna, has documented and spoken out towards the use of torture on political prisoners in Belarus.

Alexander Lukashenko has been president of Belarus given that 1994, when the country recognized a new constitution following the crack-up of the Soviet Union.

Bialiatski was arrested pursuing widespread protests in opposition to Lukashenko’s regime in 2020 and 2021, which ended up satisfied with a violent crackdown and hundreds of arrests.

Belarus is Russia’s only European ally next its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and has also confronted Western sanctions.
