President Donald Trump on Thursday said he has ordered the U.S. Commerce Department to create a new U.S. census that excludes people who are in the U.S. illegally.

The “new and highly accurate CENSUS” will be “based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS,” Trump added.

The president previously sought to omit undocumented immigrants from the census and tried unsuccessfully to add a citizenship question to it during his first term in office.
