The U.K. competition regulator on Thursday referred the proposed merger concerning Vodafone and CK Hutchison’s Three cell network to an in-depth investigation.

The Level of competition and Marketplaces Authority said, with the data that it at this time has, the deal might “be envisioned to end result in a considerable lessening of competitors in a current market or marketplaces in the United Kingdom.”

In late March, the CMA gave Vodafone and CK Hutchison five doing work days to occur up with “significant solutions” to the regulator’s issues or face an in-depth investigation.

The CMA has specified alone a deadline of Sept. 18 to entire the in-depth probe, also regarded as a phase 2 investigation.

Vodafone and A few were not right away available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

The CMA has previously explained the offer could guide to prospects dealing with better prices and minimized high quality, a lessening of competitiveness in the U.K. cellular marketplace. Regulators have argued the transaction could also result in so-named cell digital community operators, which depend on Vodafone and Three’s infrastructure, not staying ready to negotiate very good deals for their have buyers.

The regulator’s course of action hinges on a choice on whether the deal will guide to a “significant lessening of level of competition” (SLC) in the marketplace. The CMA can distinct the transaction in the absence of SLC or request remedies from the businesses to address its fears.

Introduced final 12 months, Vodafone and CK Hutchison’s transaction would merge the two brands’ U.K. businesses, providing Vodafone a 51% managing stake and leaving CK Hutchison with the minority desire.

The combination of Vodafone’s U.K. business and Three British isles will lower the variety of cellular operators in the country to just 3, following important consolidation in the telecommunications sector in the previous few yrs.

The CMA opened an antitrust probe into the merger in January.
