Hermes lawsuit claims luxury retailer reserves its famed Birkin bags only for its greatest spenders

Hermes is getting focused in a new lawsuit accusing the luxurious retailer of providing its coveted Birkin purses only to consumers who have put in exorbitant quantities of dollars at the retail outlet on other merchandise.

The proposed federal class-action lawsuit, which was filed this week in San Francisco, alleges that Hermes is violating antitrust regulation by producing clients obtain other goods in the retailer right before being granted the privilege of purchasing a Birkin bag from Hermes.

Birkin purses, which are handcrafted from leather-based by artisans in France, can value tens of countless numbers of dollars, hundreds of 1000’s of pounds on the next-hand industry, and are observed on the arms of celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Cardi B. The handbags can only be bought in a Hermes store, not on its site.

While product sales associates really don’t obtain a commission for providing Birkins, the lawsuit claims, they are instructed to use the Birkin purses as a way to coerce buyers into obtaining other solutions, for which they obtain a 3% fee.

Hermes did not quickly react to a request for remark early Thursday.

The lawsuit is trying to get class action status for all U.S. inhabitants that, over the earlier four years, bought or were questioned to purchase ancillary merchandise in buy to obtain a Birkin.
