The chairs of two U.S. Property committees questioned the Biden administration to examine 4 Chinese organizations they say are included in Ford Motor’s planned Michigan battery plant, in accordance to a letter witnessed Monday by Reuters.

The previously unreported letter mentioned the four Chinese firms have immediate ties to the Chinese military, Chinese Communist Party, North Korean authorities and alleged human rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang area.

The plant has drawn fire from U.S. lawmakers for its use of know-how supplied by Chinese battery maker CATL. Representative Mike Gallagher, who chairs the pick out committee on China, and Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who chairs the Power and Commerce Committee, urged the Commerce Section to investigate and impose export restrictions on the 4 Chinese firms they reported had been concerned in the “facility’s style and design, development, and facts technologies (IT) processes.”

The Chinese businesses were not named in the letter witnessed by Reuters for the reason that the committees reviewed confidential data turned above by Ford and were not permitted to make their identities general public.

Ford explained Monday it follows “all federal government restrictions throughout our business” and included: “Ford suppliers are necessary to meet up with our better requirements, such as for defending human legal rights, and obligated to prolong these specifications to suppliers with whom they could perform.”

In September, the two lawmakers demanded documents from Ford tied to its CATL partnership and threatened to connect with CEO Jim Farley to testify ahead of Congress.

Republicans have been probing Ford’s battery plant approach for months in excess of concerns it could facilitate the circulation of U.S. tax subsidies to China and leave Ford dependent on Chinese technological know-how. Ford claims the battery plant is “wholly owned and operated” by the automaker.

The lawmakers claimed a Ford-CATL agreement puts a Beijing-primarily based company in demand of getting ready “the principle structure” for the Michigan battery plant. The committee reported the very same Chinese corporation is delivering engineering style solutions to China’s army.

The lawmakers separately wrote the Treasury and Condition Departments asking them to investigate probable sanctions evasion action by a single of the Chinese providers that they stated will be furnishing IT resources for the Michigan battery plant that has ties to North Korea.

“It is indefensible for Ford to use the exact cloud integration and information service provider that is connected to North Korean Ministry of Overseas Affairs sanctions evasion exercise,” the letter reported.

Human rights teams accuse Beijing of abuses in opposition to Xinjiang’s Uyghur inhabitants, such as the mass use of pressured labor in internment camps. China denies the allegations.

Ford in November drastically scaled again its financial commitment and potential for the Michigan plant right after it paused perform two months previously. Ford initially prepared a $3.5 billion plant but now expects to invest $2 billion in its battery plant.
