Japan staked a declare as a countrywide area power on Friday, as its Slender spacecraft landed on the moon.

The country’s Trim lander launched in September and touched down on the lunar floor all over 10:20 a.m. ET, in accordance to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Company, or JAXA. Engineers were checking the status of the spacecraft shortly just after its landing.

The feat makes Japan the fifth state to land on the moon, following Russia (then the Soviet Union), the U.S., China and India. Previous year, India joined the list of moon landings with its Chandrayaan-3 mission.

Japan’s Slender, which stands for “Sensible Lander for Investigating Moon,” is a cargo investigation mission. It carries a wide range of scientific payloads, together with an examination camera and a pair of lunar rovers.
