The role of China’s defence minister is to be the general public encounter of the People’s Liberation Army in its engagement with the media and with other militaries.

As opposed to other nations around the world, the ministry has small say in defence coverage or military management, places that drop beneath the purview of Central Military Fee, an elite team led by Xi.

Dong, 62, was most a short while ago the People’s Liberation Army Navy main. He replaces Li Shangfu, who took up the defence minister task in March but had not been observed in public due to the fact Aug. 25.

Reuters cited resources to report that Li was below investigation for corruption relevant to devices procurement and development.

Beijing has not described Li’s disappearance but stripped him of his title as defence minister and condition councillor in Oct.

A important ingredient of China’s defence minister occupation is to have interaction with the United States army to reduce the threat of conflict over Taiwan and the South China Sea, two flashpoints that have noticed growing brushes in the latest decades.

Dong would encounter no this kind of constraint, as he is not recognised to be under U.S. sanctions.

When President Joe Biden and Xi fulfilled in San Francisco previous thirty day period, both of those leaders agreed to resume senior military services talks that had been suspended following then-House of Associates Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s take a look at to self-dominated Taiwan in August 2022.
