Shares of Chinese synthetic intelligence company SenseTime plunged as much as 18.25% on Monday, falling to an all-time low just after information of its founder’s demise.

Hong Kong-shown shares of SenseTime dropped to as minimal as 1.03 Hong Kong bucks ($.13) on Monday – the least expensive amount in the firm’s history in accordance to LSEG details.

SenseTime founder and AI scientist Tang Xiao’ou died on Friday at the age of 55 right after succumbing to an illness, the enterprise explained in a statement on Saturday. SenseTime did not expose the induce of his loss of life.

SenseTime develops AI software program platforms and systems, like AI-enabled written content technology and facial recognition. The enterprise joined the world-wide race to develop generative AI since OpenAI’s ChatGPT exploded in popularity after its start in November 2022.

Even so, the firm was placed on a U.S. trade black checklist in 2019, which restricts American corporations from executing enterprise with it. The U.S. alleged that SenseTime is linked to human legal rights violations in China’s Xinjiang region.

Tang launched SenseTime in 2014 and the enterprise was stated on the Hong Kong Inventory Trade in 2021. He also held the positions of director of Pujiang Laboratory, director of Shanghai AI Lab, and a professor of the Chinese College of Hong Kong, according to the organization.
