LONDON — The U.K. on Thursday accused Russia of conducting a years-extended “campaign of destructive cyber exercise” towards politicians, civil servants and journalists aimed at undermining British democracy.

Britain’s National Cyber Protection Centre — part of GCHQ, the country’s intelligence agency — reported in a report that Russian spies had been working the cyber campaign against high-profile British individuals and entities because at least 2015 by way of to this year, focusing on numerous pivotal U.K. political occasions.
