Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella mentioned it is “factually not right” to claim that Microsoft controls its husband or wife OpenAI, in an excerpt of a pre-taped interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin airing Tuesday.

Nadella’s remarks came soon after Elon Musk — the CEO of Tesla, Twitter and SpaceX, who also co-launched OpenAI — experienced claimed in an job interview with Tucker Carlson in April that “Microsoft has a really strong say, if not directly controls, OpenAI at this level.” Musk has been a vocal critic of latest advancements in synthetic intelligence, and he was just one of far more than 27,000 people today to sign an open letter in March that known as on AI labs to pause improvement.

“Glance, even though I have a great deal of regard for Elon and all that he does, I’d just say that’s factually not accurate,” Nadella claimed. “OpenAI is very grounded in their mission of getting managed by a nonprofit board. We have a noncontrolling fascination in it, we have a fantastic commercial partnership in it.”

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI was launched in 2015 as a nonprofit. The framework improved in 2019, when two top executives released a blog post announcing the development of a “capped-financial gain” entity known as OpenAI LP. The current set up restricts the startup’s first traders from producing additional than 100 periods their money, with reduced returns for later traders, this kind of as Microsoft.

Microsoft announced a multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment into OpenAI in January, which marked the third phase of the partnership between the two companies. Microsoft has been integrating OpenAI’s technology, such as GPT-4, across its items and solutions in latest months.

Nadella reported AI progress is going on immediately but that it is critical for Microsoft to capitalize on the technological know-how and its guarantee.

“If nearly anything, I come to feel, yes, it’s shifting rapidly, but moving rapidly in the right way,” he reported. “Individuals are in the loop vs . staying out of the loop. It’s a style selection, which, at minimum, we have manufactured.”

Nadella’s whole job interview with Sorkin will be streamed Tuesday on NBC News Now and Peacock at 10:30 p.m. ET.
