Former Dwelling Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi endorsed fellow California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff on Thursday in the already-aggressive 2024 Senate race for the seat currently held by Dianne Feinstein.

But Pelosi said she would only endorse Schiff if Feinstein, who at 89 is the oldest sitting senator, decides not to find reelection.

If Feinstein does run for a further time period, then “she has my full-hearted support,” stated the 82-year-previous Pelosi, who in November stepped down as the very long-serving Property Democratic chief just after Republicans won the chamber majority in the November midterm elections.

A spokesman for Feinstein’s office did not quickly respond to CNBC’s request for remark on Pelosi’s assertion.

“If she decides not to run, I will be supporting House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, who knows effectively the nexus between a strong Democracy and a strong economic climate,” Pelosi mentioned in a assertion introduced by Schiff’s Senate marketing campaign Thursday early morning.

“In his provider in the Home, he has focused on strengthening our Democracy with justice and on building an economic climate that performs for all,” Pelosi explained.

Pelosi claimed the 62-12 months-outdated Schiff, who very first ran for Congress in 2000, has dedicated his everyday living to public service. “Each individual time I have asked Adam to take on the difficult fight from extremist forces, he has responded with integrity, toughness and achievements,” she stated.

The endorsement comes 1 7 days after Schiff, the previous chairman of the Household Intelligence Committee, launched his bid for Feinstein’s coveted Senate seat. His announcement framed him as a fighter in opposition to Republicans, and played up his one-time role as the major impeachment supervisor in the 1st Senate trial of former President Donald Trump. Pelosi had picked him for that function, which ended in Trump’s acquittal by the GOP-led Senate.

“They usually are not heading to stop. We have to stop them. Which is why I am jogging for the U.S. Senate,” Schiff reported in a campaign-launch online video.

Feinstein, meanwhile, has not nevertheless claimed whether she will operate all over again or retire at the conclude of her time period. Her Senate marketing campaign elevated very little money in the last months of past yr, latest campaign filings clearly show, a signal to some that she may not be preparing for one more run.

Schiff was not the to start with Democrat to bounce into the race for Feinstein’s seat. Democratic Rep. Katie Porter announced Jan. 10 that she will operate for Senate in California, snagging the endorsement of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

Pelosi’s announcement as a result of Schiff’s campaign started with effusive praise for Feinstein and her lengthy profession in politics.

“Considering that her election to the Senate in 1992, Senator Feinstein has attained a outstanding legislative history, constantly offering for California and forcefully honoring her oath to protect and defend,” Pelosi reported. She referenced Feinstein’s work on the 1994 assault weapons ban, as well as on the Violence Against Females Act and the Respect for Relationship Act, among other highlights.

“The usa is at a crossroads. We can proceed to lift our communities, strengthen our overall economy and defend our Democracy — or enable Republicans roll back our progress, threaten our freedoms and give tax breaks to the rich distinctive pursuits,” Pelosi’s assertion said. “In 2024, the struggle for America’s long term is on the ballot.”
