Explosions described at army airbase deep inside Russia

Blasts were being listened to at Russia’s Engels air base, hundreds of kilometers (miles) from the frontlines in Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian media retailers described early on Monday.

There was no immediate official confirmation of the blasts and Reuters was not equipped to independently verify the experiences.

The RBC-Ukraine news company claimed that two explosions took area.

The Russian news outlet Baza documented, citing nearby citizens, that air raid sirens were wailing and an explosion was heard.

The air base, in the vicinity of the city of Saratov, about 730 km (450 miles) southeast of Moscow, was strike on Dec. 5 in what Russia explained was Ukrainian drone attacks on two Russian air bases that day.

The twin strikes dealt Moscow a major reputational blow and raised queries about why its defenses failed, analysts claimed, as notice turned to the use of drones in the war between neighbors.

Ukraine has by no means publicly claimed duty for attacks inside of Russia, but has claimed, even so, that such incidents are “karma” for Russia’s invasion.
