Amazon explained on Thursday it will open up a new plant in a Seattle suburb to make satellites for Venture Kuiper.

Job Kuiper, unveiled in 2019, is Amazon’s program to build a community of 3,236 satellites in lower Earth orbit to deliver superior-speed broadband internet. Amazon notched a crucial milestone in 2020 when the Federal Communications Fee licensed the satellite web program.

In order to meet up with its focus on of acquiring 3,000-plus satellites into orbit, Amazon will need to create one particular to 3 satellites “every single single working day, possibly even a tiny extra than that,” Amazon products chief Dave Limp mentioned in an interview with The Washington Publish on Thursday.

“We have to create the manufacturing capabilities that seems to be much more like consumer electronics or vehicles and considerably less like the standard house market,” Limp reported.

Though Amazon has not stated when the Kuiper launch campaign will commence, FCC principles need the firm to deploy half of its planned satellites within just six decades – which means about 1,600 in orbit by July 2026.

Amazon has reported it strategies to make investments more than $10 billion into creating Project Kuiper, and it now has a 219,000-sq.-foot investigate and progress facility centered in Redmond, Washington. The Redmond web site has formulated prototypes and assisted with commercial satellite creation, “but to deliver on our vision for the venture, we need to run on a significantly greater scale,” Amazon explained.

The new 172,000-sq.-foot factory will be found in the close by metropolis of Kirkland, Washington. It is predicted to create extra than 200 careers in the Puget Sound region, the enterprise reported.

The more plant potential will allow Amazon to enter the 2nd section of its production course of action, Limp claimed.

Considering the fact that obtaining FCC approval, Amazon has ramped up function on its initial two prototype satellites, known as KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2.

Amazon claimed in Nov. 2021 that it hoped to launch individuals prototypes with ABL Space on its RS1 rocket in late 2022. But previously this thirty day period, Amazon mentioned United Launch Alliance would carry the satellites on their debut flight, delaying the launch to early up coming calendar year.

Limp mentioned Thursday that Amazon has started off integration and ultimate assembly of its first two prototype satellites, adding they “need to be completed by the conclusion of Q4.”
