Oil protesters show up in court soon after throwing soup at Van Gogh painting

The local weather activists who threw soup more than Vincent Van Gogh’s well-known “Sunflowers” portray on Saturday appeared in a London court docket on expenses of felony damages, numerous shops claimed.

The two ladies had been protesting as section of the campaign team Just Prevent Oil, and they pleaded not responsible at the Westminster Magistrates’ Courtroom for the duration of two quick hearings.

Following dumping two cans of tomato soup above the Van Gogh oil portray Friday, the protesters also glued on their own to the gallery wall. They were being taken off by experts and taken into custody, in accordance to the London Metropolitan Police.

A spokesperson for the National Gallery confirmed that there was no destruction to the portray, which is one of the legendary variations of “Sunflowers” that Van Gogh painted in the late 1880s. It has an approximated price of $80.99 million.

“There is some small destruction to the frame but the painting is unharmed,” the spokesperson told CNBC. The portray was covered by glass, and it was cleaned and returned to the National Gallery Friday afternoon.

Just Stop Oil has been protesting in London for the past two weeks, and the team claimed in a push release that its actions have been “in response to the government’s inaction on each the charge of living disaster and the local climate disaster.”

“What is value far more, art or lifetime? Is it well worth far more than food stuff? Worth more than justice? Are you much more anxious about the protection of a painting or the defense of our planet and people?” one activist mentioned in a video clip of the function.

Just Quit Oil has acquired popular criticism from environmental groups and politicians from the opposition Labour Get together next the protest.
